You can crouch and sprint (by holding the down button on the d-pad, which works better than you’d think) and generally the player character feels responsive and decent to control.ĭeclassified is made up of four main modes – operations (campaign) time trials hostiles & multiplayer. Vita’s triggers are used to aim down sights and shoot, with melee and grenades mapped to the front touch which feels slightly cumbersome. If you’ve ever played a previous Call of Duty game you’ll be right at home here, but if not it’s a fairly fast-paced first person shooter that’s easy to get to grips with. In terms of actually gameplay itself, the title gets things mostly right.

There’s no opening movie no real cutscenes in single player and a distinct lack of options in multiplayer – yet in spite of this the game does have some redeeming features, you just have to really dig for them. Right from your first moments with Black Ops Declassified, you’ll be able to tell development of the title was monumentally rushed. Guns and explosions sound tinny and voice acting is average, with grunts and yelps from enemy soldiers going alongside the odd quip from Mason or Woods. Sound is similarly lacking – music is all ripped straight out of Black Ops which is still a positive as that game had some fantastic tunes. Things like fences, walls and floors look flat and uninspired and I feel like more effort could have been put in to make areas feel alive. For starters, multiplayer maps have been chopped down to a fraction of size of their console counterparts to accommodate smaller player counts while campaign maps are generally just one long set of corridors with occasional open rooms connecting them. Yet they’re all very, very sparse and lacking detail on close inspection. Colour is used well – some areas are drab warzones while others are lighter and easier to make out, meaning you’ll get a nice mix while exploring Declassified‘s different modes. They’re all ripped from previous Call of Duty games so originality is out of the window, but at least they’re pretty varied – from snowy fortresses to shipping containers and even a 60’s-style American street in Nukehouse. The biggest issue is that most foes are copy-pasted to death within levels – sometimes it makes sense, such as a Secret Service detail all in suits and sunglasses but seeing the exact same camouflage soldiers over and over in a mission is just a bore.Įnvironments are more of a mixed bag. Unfortunately modelling for enemies leaves a lot to be desired – most have blurred edges and undefined features, although they do at least move in a realistic manner. It’s not quite Killzone-level s, but it’s decent enough to make you feel immersed. The main character’s models are actually among the highlights – things like guns look good and shoot realistically reload animations are smart and Mason/Woods look at their hands when interacting with the environments.

This is a world full of paranoia and espionage and that does come across well – at least for as long as the story lasts, since it wraps up before going anywhere significant.Īs the product of an obviously rushed development cycle, Declassified is a graphically messy game that isn’t one to show off what the Vita is capable of – yet it certainly does have elements that are worth commending. World-building is at least slightly stronger, but mostly due to the fact that Declassified pulls on the prior narrative beats set up by previous titles.

Even the game’s final ‘boss’ is a disappointment due to the fact he’s never seen prior to you shooting him in the face, even though he has ties to the overall Black Ops narrative. It doesn’t help matters that there’s no character development either – Mason and Woods are completely unlikeable mercenary jerks who spout stupid one-liners yet say little else while mission briefings come from an un-named narrator between levels.
